  15. No Peace For Rangoon

  17. <p>     Despite more than two years of house arrest, Aung San Suu Kyi
  18. casts a bigger shadow than ever over the repressive rulers of
  19. Burma. The official presentation of her Nobel Peace Prize to her
  20. son last week triggered demonstrations and renewed calls abroad
  21. for the generals to hand over power to the parliament that was
  22. elected last year.

  24. <p>     Widespread reports that retired strongman Ne Win had
  25. recently suffered a stroke fanned hopes that the military might
  26. finally yield. Yet when 700 students gathered at the University
  27. of Rangoon to press for Suu Kyi's release, hundreds of heavily
  28. armed troops surrounded the campus, arrested scores, and shut
  29. the universities.
  30. </p>
  31. <p>     Junta officials still say they plan to return the country
  32. to elected rule, but they have to be careful to avoid economic
  33. or political disorder during the transition. Given the
  34. demonstrations last week, the restoration of democracy seemed
  35. unlikely anytime soon.
